ENROLLMENT AT A GERMAN UNIVERSITY
The free education tag given to study in Germany can at times be a bit misleading. Many prospective students think this means they won't have to make any expenses for taking up the program. However, that is not true, even though the university offering the Free education may not take any tuition fees there are other charges that may be levied. The enrollment process to the university must be completed and this entails a couple of things.
Enrollment isn't a particularly difficult procedure, but the nuances differ from one institution to the next, so read the tiny print while building a to-do list. Importantly, pupils will be required to pay an enrollment fee of roughly €200-€500. This must be paid again at the beginning of each semester, when you will be given a Semesterticket that grants you access to university resources such as computer labs and libraries. The Semesterticket also grants students access to free public transportation, which is a significant benefit if living expenses are a concern.
You will need to produce specific documentation to the admissions office at your university before you can get a Semesterticket or a student ID card.
Enrollment will often include the following elements:
* To receive a university ID card, you must present your passport and passport photos.
* You must show proof of a valid residency permit.
* If there are any outstanding details on your application form, you must complete it. Academic certifications must be submitted.
* Proof of German language ability (this is sometimes not required after your application has been accepted, but you should keep the documents just in case).
* Presentation of your admission letter, confirming your entrance to the university.
* You must provide proof that you have secured the necessary health insurance coverage.
Students must re-register for their courses every semester. You'll have to pay a semester fee, but you won't have to resubmit any of your paperwork. Most students can instead re-register by providing their student ID card and paying the fee. It's not meant to be a time-consuming exercise or a means of detecting slacker students.
The majority of students re-register before the end of the preceding semester. It's a good idea to plan ahead because late payments are subject to a surcharge to cover administrative charges.
