Fun ways to break out of your comfort zone when studying abroad
Living in a capital city made it slightly more difficult to put your language abilities to use than your peers who were studying in smaller towns with far fewer tourists and thus far less English spoken. When learning overseas, it's all too easy to become disheartened, but the key is to persevere and push you beyond your comfort zone. When you only have a limited amount of time in your selected country and want to learn and experience as much as possible, the phrase "life begins at the end of your comfort zone" rings true. Here are a few options for escaping from yours!
Travel
Traveling has a seemingly limitless number of advantages: you get to see more of the country you care about, you get to experience various cultures, languages, and people, your spoken language improves tenfold, and the fact that you are travelling alone allows you to take in more of your surroundings. Traveling solo may be intimidating at first, but it is a fantastic experience and frequently a lot more enjoyable. Take the plunge, and you'll see a difference right away.
Take non-Erasmus classes
This may appear to be a straightforward idea, but it is frequently disregarded. The motivation to take all Erasmus classes is strong since you get to stay with your friends and learn in a setting that is tailored to your needs. However, if you step outside of your comfort zone and take more risks, you will be far more exposed to ‘real-life,' and your ears will adjust a lot faster! Taking these programmes also gives you the opportunity to meet new people and establish friends, which is beneficial on both a professional and social level.
Take a dance/cooking/sport class
You may be horrified at the prospect of displaying your talent to the rest of the world at first. After being led along by an overeager housemate for the first week, you may learn that nearly everyone was just as horrible as you were, and those who were truly great were so friendly and helpful. Taking a class like this is not only a terrific way to enhance your language skills, but it's also a great opportunity to increase your confidence and meet new people!
Meet new people by going out with your foreign buddies!
Accept all invitations to socialize with your native pals. The friends you've made, and even their own friends, are the most welcome individuals you've ever met and they'll go out of their way to aid you, which is slightly unfathomable. The more people you meet, the easier it is to meet more, and you will find people willing to practice foreign languages with you in exchange for English conversation classes almost anywhere you go. People are desperate to learn English, so assist them; just make sure you benefit from it as well!
When travelling abroad, there are endless options; just make sure you take advantage of as many as you can. Don't be scared to go in head first!
