How to avoid over packing when you go abroad for study
You've been accepted to a prestigious college, you've obtained a visa, you've purchased plane tickets, and you've made a detailed packing list... The only thing left to do now is pack. So, if you think you've completed all of the obstacles, think again! Here are some packing suggestions to help you pack wisely and avoid over packing:
Formals: Take it easy on the formals and stock up on the casuals. One formal suit will be worn for career fairs or internship interviews, and the rest will be casual.
Shoes: Pack good leather shoes because they are expensive in other countries. Casual shoes can be purchased abroad because they are less expensive there. It is a good idea to bring a pair of slippers or sandals.
Winter wear: Any winter clothing you buy in your home country will almost certainly be insufficient for the climate where you are moving, as winters can be quite severe. So, if you're going to the spring session, just bring one heavy jacket, a sweater, and a scarf. If you're going during the fall session, you can buy them there once you've settled in. Thermals are able to be rolled up and packed. Even better, wear all of your winter clothing while leaving the house to reduce total luggage weight!
Laptop bag: It's best to buy your laptop in the country where you're moving because it may be cheaper there. Purchase a laptop bag and fill it with clothes, electronics, and other items. The plan is to make good use of the laptop bag's seven kilos allowance!
Watch the weight: Each weighing machine has its own storey to tell. So, while it's a good idea to get some scales and weigh your bags at home, don't rely entirely on them. Allow yourself a two-kilo buffer and pack light. You don't want your belongings to be thrown away at the check-in counter!
Food and kitchen items: Connect with others who are travelling to the same college from your home country and plan your needs as a group. You can find a wide variety of condiments and food that is similar to your home country, so bring only what you will need to cook a meal on your first day there. If necessary, your parents can always send you parcels of your favourite snacks later.
Pack at least three sets of clothes and your essentials in your cabin baggage to ensure that you can survive in a hotel for three days if your luggage is lost! If you intend to work in the same country after finishing your studies, you will almost certainly need to relocate to another state for the job. Baggage is restricted when travelling from one state to another and extra baggage costs a lot of money. So, take only what you need from here and go out and buy the rest. If you intend to work after finishing your studies, you will most likely need to return to your home country to obtain a work permit. So keep this in mind as well when packing.
