Everyone has experienced how difficult it can be to know where to begin when applying to universities. So, to ensure that you've covered all of the procedures, take a deep breath and check off all of the essential topics to consider on a handy checklist. Remember, the internet is a wonderful tool – but so is talking to people – so do as much research as you can before making a decision.

1. Determine whether you know what you want to study or if you'll take a Liberal Arts course till you know what you want to pursue. If you're not sure what you want to study, start asking a lot of questions to people around you and think about a few broad alternatives.

2. Determine the country you want to study in. Ask yourself the following questions:

* Does that country have possibilities for the course of study you want to pursue?

* Does that country provide good value for money/possible financial assistance?

* Is it crucial to you to be able to work in that nation when you finish your studies? – If this is the case, you should look into your visa and work permit alternatives right now.

* Consider the distance from home as well, if being separated from your family will be difficult for you. Sometimes looking up flight itineraries can make you feel more at ease.

3. Now that you've determined the nation you want to study abroad, start looking into universities that offer the programme you want to pursue. Choose a few universities that offer the programme – and find out what the admittance standards are.

* Confirm that you are scheduled to take or have taken any standardised or other testing required for admission to the colleges you have chosen.

* Confirm that you will be able to produce and send your school grade transcripts on time.

* Make a list of several instructors or other individuals who know you well academically to ask to submit your letters of recommendation. Don't be discouraged if some teachers say no; it's all part of the process. You want someone who believes they can provide you with an excellent recommendation to write one for you.

* Begin thinking about your personal statement writings.

4. Another critical aspect of your search is funding your study. Begin looking into scholarships and financial aid offered by the universities you're considering. Inquire with the admissions departments of these colleges for more information. Check to discover if the government of your home country or the country to which you are applying offers specific scholarships that may be of interest to you.

5. You're almost there now. You will require a visa. Check out the official government or embassy page of the country you're applying to – and make sure to follow the guidelines for required papers for your application. Also, make sure to ask the university you'll be attending if they provide visa assistance (which they occasionally do) – or if they can provide a frequently-required document for foreign-student visa applications.

All that remains is for you to prepare for your departure! Packing 101 comes up next!
