Lithuania is the southernmost and largest of the three Baltic States in Northeastern Europe.Before being part of the Polish-Lithuanian confederation for the next two centuries, Lithuania was a strong empire that controlled much of Eastern Europe in the 14th-16th centuries and is bounded by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the southwest, and the independent Russian Oblast of Kaliningrad, and the Baltic Sea to the west.

A region defined by geographers as the maritime depression, which is gradually growing eastward, borders the Baltic coastal area. Damp air masses of Atlantic origin, alternating with continental Eurasian and occasionally colder Arctic air, or air of southern, tropical origin, predominate as a result.More than four-fifths of the population of the region, which includes Russians and Poles, are ethnic Lithuanians, and fewer are Belarusians, Ukrainians, Latvians, Tatars, Roma (Gypsies), and others.Lithuanian is the official language of Lithuania, and Russian, Polish, Belarusian, Ukrainian and other languages are also spoken in larger cities, while Yiddish is widely spoken in Lithuania by members of the tiny remaining Jewish community. Primary and secondary education, starting at age six, is free and compulsory. Of the population aged 15 and over, more than nine-tenths are literate in Notable institutions of higher educationin the country.
