Tackle the homesickness bug

The thought of studying abroad is an exciting yet challenging one. On one hand you have this whole new world of possibilities that are just within your reach and on the other you feel anxious of what to expect. The constant struggle to ‘fit in’ and make a comfortable space for yourself warrs with the unlimited opportunities, international exposure and experience .


There may be times throughout your time abroad when you feel like the only place you want to be is at home, which is fine; but, there are things you can do to combat those thoughts. These are some of the things that can assist you when you feel like giving up and returning home.


Remember why you're there: Reminding yourself of why you are spending the year abroad can be beneficial. It might assist you a few times if you told yourself that if you don't give up, you end up with a degree and international experience.


Remember that it’s not permanent: If you are really struggling, keep in mind that your year abroad isn't permanent; you will only be there for a few months.


Go for a walk: This would be quite beneficial to you once you arrive in a foreign country. When you are feeling low and homesick, take a walk around the lake and admire the majestic beauty. It will be quite rejuvenating for you.


Do something you enjoy: When you are feeling homesick, do something you enjoy to divert your attention away from your thoughts. It will be extremely beneficial to you during your year abroad.


Indulge in some home comforts: When you are longing home, it can help to watch a TV show, watch a movie, or eat something familiar from home.


These are some of the things that can help you stay motivated during your year abroad, but bear in mind that everyone copes with homesickness in their own unique way.
