There is more than one reason to why Germany is considered the Mecca of higher education. The fact that it offers free education to international students and has a wide range of study options from science, arts, medicine, technology, communication, law and many more.

It's important to learn as much as you can about the education system, organization, and expenses when you decide to study abroad in Germany. It will make you adapt quicker, and once you get there, you will not have any unexpected surprises. So, here are only a few things to remember to prepare you for a degree in Germany.

Most states in Germany do not charge EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students any tuition fees. Students only pay an administration fee of EUR 100-350/semester, which also involves a public transport transit pass in the area or even in the state as a whole. In addition, the administration fee partly covers the university's administration expenses and social contributions to the Studentenwerk.

Each semester, some universities request about EUR 500 from students who need three to four semesters longer to complete their programmes than their fellow students. You will also have to pay your living costs, which vary depending on the German town in which you live, in addition to tuition or administration fees.

In order to be admitted to a German university, you must show that you have an admission qualification for higher education that enables you to be admitted to higher education in your home country. By going to the DAAD Admissions database or to the KMK database, you can verify whether your higher education entrance qualification is equal to the German qualification.

You usually have to show that your German language skills are good enough for studying before you can take a course at a German university. When the academic year starts, you will attend German language courses in conjunction with your regular studies. For foreign students, universities in Germany organize special German language courses.
