A geothermal source for research on the TU Delft campus

About ten years ago, a group of TU Delft students got the idea to drill a geothermal well on the university campus. What at first seemed like a wild plan was set in motion when it turned out that the campus was in an ideal location. For study leader Phil Vardon, it is now almost becoming a reality. After years of measurements, research and making contacts, the preparations for the realization are in full swing. “With this source on campus, TU Delft will become one of the largest hotspots for geothermal research worldwide.”
This geothermal project is unique because it serves two purposes, says Phil Vardon, leader of the Geothermal Science & Engineering research theme. In addition to providing heat to university buildings, the geothermal well will serve as a high-quality research facility. “This source will heat the campus, but above all we will use this source to generate crucial knowledge about geothermal energy. Not just for this project, but for the entire energy transition.”
