The European Union Commission is undertaking new measures in order to strengthen the contribution of education and training to the recovery of the block from the pandemic, among others, by adopting two new initiatives. The European Education Area and the Digital Education Plan are two new initiatives that intend to offer young Europeans more opportunities in training and education as well as employment across Europe.

According to a press release of the EU Commission issued on the new initiatives, the Communication on the European Education Area outlines the way cooperation between the member states will enrich the quality, inclusiveness and digital and green dimension of the education systems of all member states.

The vision contained within the European Education Area is that across the EU, spending time abroad to study and learn among youngsters should be the norm, while at the same time, knowing two languages alongside with the mother tongue should become standard. The initiative intends to provide access to high-quality education, irrespective of their socio-economic background to all Europeans, and to create a stronger sense of their identity as Europeans, of Europe’s cultural heritage and its diversity.

The Commission plans to reach its goal by strengthening the Erasmus+ programme, creating an ambitious framework for an EU policy cooperation in education and training, and also supporting the education reforms in each Member State through the European Semester, which provides a framework for the coordination of economic policies across the European Union. Whereas through the Digital Education Plan, the Commission aims to make education and training systems fit for the digital age.

The Commission concludes that through the 2021-2027 Digital Education Action plan the EU will achieve better use of digital technology for learning and teaching, will help youngsters digital competencies and skills, while at the same time improving education through better data analysis and foresight.
