ETIAS – European Travel Information and Authorization System

news

ETIAS stands for the Information and Authorization Scheme for European Travel. It is a fully electronic system that enables and maintains track of tourists from countries that do not need a visa in order to reach the Schengen region. In a way, it resembles the Electronic Travel Authorization System (ESTA) of the United States, which serves a similar function. The legal processes for moving the ETIAS began in 2016 and it is planned that the framework will be introduced on 1 January 2021. However, it will only become fully successful and compulsory for travellers by the end of 2022.

For each applicant, the ETIAS will undergo a comprehensive security check to determine whether it is possible to allow them to enter any Schengen Zone country. Although citizens of countries that do not need a visa for travel duration of up to 90 days in the EU do not have to go through a long process of applying for a visa, the ETIAS will ensure that they do not pose a threat to safety. In order to decide if it is safe for them to access the Schengen countries, this travel authorization system would collect, keep track of and update required information concerning tourists. The ETIAS, besides being used for business and tourist purposes, would also allow people to visit the Schengen countries for medical and transit reasons. It will also be compulsory for all countries that are visa-free in the Schengen region.

Security is the key reason for authorizing the ETIAS authorization. The EU needs to ensure safe travel in its countries, considering the increased risk for travellers worldwide. The ETIAS would greatly minimize security issues through its systems for information and data collection. What this means is that the ETIAS can detect if, in some way, an individual is a threat to the protection of the Schengen countries. This will lead to the individual being refused entry and the danger of being present inside EU borders will be avoided. Before it is even there, it will essentially deal with a problem. It is estimated that the ETIAS application will take about 10 minutes to fill out. It's going to be online, so you don't have to go through the documentation. It will present you with many fields to fill, depending on the country of citizenship you chose. The ETIAS won't strain your finances a great deal. For each application, the ETIAS cost is expected to be only €7. This is only applicable for people over the age of 18, as no fees would have to be charged by those under 18. By debit or by credit card, you can pay the bill. The ETIAS authorization will begin processing immediately after you finish the payment.
