Germany Lifts Travel Restrictions for 31 European Countries, Including UK
The Federal German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has finally announced its decision to lift a travel warning for non-essential trips to 31 European countries, including the UK, which was imposed in March, amid the Coronavirus pandemic outbreak. The decision has been taken by the Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in collaboration with the other German authorities, after previously warning that it may permit its citizens to travel to the rest of EU starting from June 15.
“The Federal Government decided on June 3, 2020, that the travel warning for the member states of the European Union, for Schengen-associated states and for the United Kingdom should be lifted from June 15 and replaced by individual travel advice,” the Ministry announced through a press release. It also noted that a warning about unnecessary tourist trips abroad remains into effect until further notice, including severe drastic restrictions in international air and travel traffic, worldwide entry restrictions, quarantine measures and restrictions in public life in many countries can still be expected.
According to the Ministry, changes to the entry and quarantine regulations can sometimes be made without prior notice and with immediate effect. As per entry into Germany, the authorities note that an essential reason for entry is still required.
“The requirement of a valid reason for entry will in principle be maintained, but there will be additional facilities for travel for family or personal reasons,” the press release highlighted. Germany abolished the border controls at the border with Luxembourg on May 16 early in the morning, on a prior decision of the German Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer.
The Minister has also decided to keep in place border controls with France, Austria and Switzerland, and airside borders with Italy and Spain will end on June 15, 2020. Border controls at the border with Denmark will continue to be carried out for the time being, until a further decision in consultation with the Danish government. Still, there will be easing in the practical design of the controls.
Within the last days, several EU and Schengen member states have announced they will be opening their borders to the nationals of other fellow member states for non-essential entry, including Greece, the Baltic States, Hungary, Bulgaria, etc. Italy has today opened its borders to tourists from the Schengen Area and the European Union Member States, despite criticism that such a move was ‘premature.’
