At least one long flight delay would have been encountered by any frequent flyer, which could have caused him or her significant trouble and inconvenience. A delayed or cancelled flight can mean fewer hours of vacation for others, but an important meeting, an event you were looking forward to, or even the last hours of a loved one’s life, may be missed for others. The European Union has established EU Regulation 261/2004 with a view to protecting travellers and respecting their rights. In order to ensure that an individual receives all the attention and care in the event of a delayed, cancelled, overbooked or downgraded flight and other similar situations, the regulation specifies what airlines should do. EU Regulation 261/2004 sets down minimum protections for passengers when, against their will, they are denied boarding, their flight is cancelled or their flight is delayed.

Food and drinks should be provided to passengers whose flights are delayed. If a flight is delayed overnight, lodging should also be provided to the passenger. Each passenger is entitled to seek compensation unless the air carrier has told them of the delay on time. If your flight has been delayed recently, you will have the right to seek reimbursement from the air carrier if you have a confirmed reservation for the flight in question.

If you feel that you are entitled to compensation for a flight delay, you may need to claim it. If you do not ask for it, no one can pay you. You have many choices, depending on how you see it fair, on how to make a compensation claim. We clarified each of these choices subsequently, and at what stage of your argument you should consider using each.

Complain to the Airline: This is the first step to be taken by anyone. Without trying out this one, you cannot move to the second, third or last choice. If it does not work out to complain to the airline, then you can try some of the others. Complaint to National Authorities: You can wait for their reply once you have sent the complaint form to the airline. You will move on to the next step of the flight compensation claim if they fail to get back to you within two months, or you are not happy with their reply. On 2 July, the European Commission announced that it will begin violation proceedings against ten EU Member States for infringement of EU passenger rights legislation by providing airline vouchers instead of refunds during the COVID-19 pandemic.
