How to Get a Swedish Student Visa
There are many reasons why students from around the world choose Sweden to study a degree course abroad. These include an opportunity for students from the EU / EEA and Switzerland to pursue a tuition-free programme. If you're still uncertain where to study in Sweden, you'll have to determine before you can start the process of applying for a student visa. After being admitted at a Swedish university, you will get a letter of approval needed to apply for a visa.
Locally referred to as "study residency permit," the student visa is the document that allows you to enter Sweden to stay to work in the country for duration of more than three months. The following study visas for Sweden apply, depending on how long your studies will last:
- Short-stay visa – whenever you are participating in a research plan lasting fewer than three months.
- Type D long-stay visa (also known as the "study residence permit") – If you are enrolled for a study program lasting more than six months.
Swiss nationals may qualify for a visa if their thesis has a period of more than three months. They may however start their studies immediately after arrival in Sweden or apply before admission to the university is announced. You need to meet a few requirements to be qualified for the student visa. They can be found below:
- The university program to which you have applied must be full-time.
- You must have a written confirmation of your admission.
- List of recognized universities in Sweden.
- Payment of the first tuition fee is advised.
- You are required to have comprehensive health insurance if you stay less than one year.
- Your passport will be valid for at least six months.
You are allowed to work during university study without any hourly restrictions. But it is advisable that you do not neglect your study since you will have to prove that you have made progress and show satisfactory academic results.
