UAntwerp, UGent and VUB will collaborate in the field of lifelong learning and set up Nova Academy for this purpose. With this, the universities want to strengthen lifelong learning in Flanders under the motto “Bringing Learning to life”.

The three universities will jointly develop various joint (training) initiatives. The first result of this is the launch of a common lifelong learning platform that makes the offerings of the three universities searchable and communicated to anyone who wants to learn more. Rectors Rik Van de Walle (UGent), Herman Van Goethem (UAntwerp) and Caroline Pauwels (VUB) announced this this morning at a live press conference.

The common platform for lifelong learning lists all courses, lectures and study days that can be followed at the universities as further or further training. This concerns one-off initiatives, short modules, longer courses of one or even several years and postgraduate courses.

The alliance between Ghent University, UAntwerp and VUB opens up new perspectives for higher education in Belgium, but is also an added value at an international level. The goal of the Nova Academy platform is to continuously include alumni and citizens in developments within their domain or to allow them to discover new domains, and thus contribute to the needs of society. Lifelong learning is part of the policy objectives of the Flemish Government and is also an important objective at European level in 'the Higher European Education Area'. Its main goal is to give everyone the opportunity to learn lifelong, both within their own domain and beyond.

Each of the three universities already organizes refresher courses that fall within lifelong learning. This includes postgraduate courses, permanent training, long and short-term courses and lectures and study days. The existing offer at each university will be maintained, but will be inventoried, deepened and expanded at the same time.

The demand for accessible lifelong learning courses has been around for a long time. The three universities are responding to this with the establishment of Nova Academy. In addition, the three universities are working on new training initiatives and joint micro-credentials.
