Lithuania Expands Its List of High Risk EU Countries – Obliges More Arrivals to Self-Isolate
Citizens of Estonia, Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Sweden as well as those of Denmark’s Hovedstaden and Nordjylland regions wishing to enter Lithuania from today, November 2, must first comply with the requirement of self-quarantine and testing procedures, as these countries have been placed on Lithuania’s COVID-19 red list, the country’s Ministry of Health has announced.
The decision comes after an evaluation that the countries mentioned above have marked an increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in recent weeks, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Lithuania’s health authorities have registered 1,001 new cases of COVID-19 infections on Saturday, while on Sunday there have been reported a total of 895 cases.
The total number of infections from the deadly virus has risen to 16,556. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 170 persons have died of COVID-19 in Lithuania, while the country has reported a total of 11,495 active cases, according to the statistics published by Worldometers.
Last week, Lithuania’s government announced that thirteen municipalities, mainly located in the country’s North-West part, would go back into lockdown, from October 26 until November 9, after a surge in the number of infection cases.
The decision follows Lithuania’s administration decision introduced last week, which stressed that it would apply a “traffic light” system, categorizing municipalities as green, yellow and red, based on the COVID-19 infection risk levels.
On Lithuania’s COVID-19 red list were included the following municipalities: Elektr?nai, Jurbarkas, Joniškis, Klaip?da, Kelm?, Kretinga, Pasvalys, Marijampol?, Plung?, Šiauliai, Skuodas and Šven?ionys. As for Kaunas County’s municipality, Raseiniai District, it already presented a local lockdown on October 9.
Earlier this month, Lithuania placed Estonia, Norway, Latvia, Finland, Denmark and Cyprus on its yellow list. The Ministry of Health’s decision excluded citizens of these three countries from quarantine rules and testing procedure, upon their arrival to Lithuania.
On October 15, Lithuania’s government included on its COVID-19 high-risk countries list other countries, in which the Coronavirus situation was considered “out of control”. Liechtenstein, Italy and Bulgaria were the countries in which the incidence rate was 10 per cent higher, during the past 14 days before the evaluation, compared to Lithuania.
