New online name encyclopedia tells the story of the Danish names
Linguists from the University of Copenhagen have in collaboration with the Danish Language and Literature Society developed the first scientifically based online name encyclopedia - Danish Name Encyclopaedia. Here, Danes can find explanations for the most common first names in the population and their spelling variants. The encyclopedia, which is being expanded on an ongoing basis, will be launched on 14 January 2022 on ordnet.dk - but is available from today.
Personal names form an essential part of the Danish vocabulary and linguistic cultural heritage, but for many years there has been a lack of a scientifically based encyclopedia about their origin and distribution. The Danish Name Encyclopaedia will remedy this shortcoming.
The encyclopedia will be launched on 14 January 2022 on ordnet.dk/dnl as a collaborative project between the Archive for Name Research at the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Language and Literature Society - but is already available now.
