Rector Damir Boras signed the MCU 2020 document

The University of Zagreb has once again become a signatory to a document called the Magna Charta Universitatum . It is a significant document originally signed by 388 rectors and heads of universities from all over Europe and beyond on September 18, 1988 , on the 900th anniversary of the founding of the University of Bologna. It contains the fundamental principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy as guidelines for good governance and understanding of universities in the future.

In 2018, the international audit group Magna Charte Universitatum was established given the changes and a different environment from 30 years ago to the present day. It included a broad discussion among academia, and the Governing Board adopted a revision of the MCO in July 2020.The Magna Charta Observatory is launching the adoption of a new version of this document.

The new document retained all the original core values ??supported by the signatories in 1988, taking into account greater accountability and potential responses to contemporary themes and challenges . The search for fundamental values ??is as valuable as their actual achievement, which in practice means a constant pursuit of progress. The new document emphasizes the global character of everything universities do and the wider range of local responsibilities they have.

MCU 2020 was developed by an international group consisting of Professor Narend Baijnath , Professor Patrick Deane , Professor Marta Losada , Ph.D.Sijbolt Noorda (Chair), Ms. Eva Egon-Polak , Professor Chanita Rukspollmuang , Ms. Tamires Gomes Sampaio , Professor Francesco Ubertini , with David Locke as Group Secretary.

The Magna Charta Observatory is an association of signatories to this university founding document, independent of political organizations or interest groups . The universities that signed the document, through their rectors, presidents and vice-rectors, cooperate with the organization and with their commitment adhere to the principles that Magna Charta Universitatumpromotes. The Association works to ensure intellectual and scientific work and integrity in institutions and society, thus strengthening trust in the relationship between universities and their communities, whether local, regional, national or global.
