If you are still not sure where you want to study in Germany, you will have to determine before you can begin the process of applying for your student visa. After being admitted to a German university, you will obtain the letter of acceptance needed to apply for a visa.

A document is required in order to enter Germany if you haven't been admitted to a university yet. This visa is the right one for you if you are interested in visiting German university campuses, checking out study opportunities or ways to spend your stay in the country.

Typically, a student applicant visa is given within several months and gives you a three-month stay with an optional extension of up to six months. If you have been admitted to a German degree programme or to a foundation course, you may enter Germany with a study visa, which is also valid for a period of three months. You need to apply for a residency permit after the initial 3 months to continue your studies. The most common form of visa in Germany is the student visa.

Apply to the German embassy or consulate in your country for a visa. Check the available dates on the German embassy's website in your home country and schedule a visa interview appointment. At least three months before your arrival in Germany, you are advised to apply for a student visa. It can take up to 25 days to process your application. They will be sent to the Immigration Office of your university for approvals after you have submitted the necessary documentation, and then returned to the embassy or consulate in your country.

Students from the EU and the EEA can work in Germany without constraints or time limits. In one year, non-EU/EEA students are permitted to work 120 complete days or 240 half days. During a course, this means 20 hours per week.

After you arrive in Germany, a residence permit is required. EU/EEA residents and citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein do not require a residency permit. You have to apply for a residency permit if you come from another country and intend to study in Germany for more than 90 days.
