The UGR is consolidated as one of the 300 best universities in the world in the Shanghai Ranking
The University of Granada (UGR) has once again been ranked among the 300 best universities in the world in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) produced each year by the University of Jiaotong (China) and whose data corresponding to 2021 have been made public today.
As happened last year, the UGR appears in positions 201-300, where the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Valencia are also located. Only the University of Barcelona, located between positions 150-200, is in a more prominent position in this ranking, becoming for another year the best-ranked Spanish university. The UGR is, moreover, the only Andalusian university ranked among the 300 best in the world, followed by Seville, which appears in positions 401-500.
In the Shanghai Ranking of 2021, the universities of Valencia, the Basque Country, the Polytechnic of Valencia and the Autonomous University of Madrid, and the Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona also appear in positions 301-400 (which drops to positions 401-500).
The Rector of the University of Granada, Pilar Aranda, after learning about the new data from the Shanghai Ranking, has congratulated the entire UGR university community for these excellent results, "which once again give us great joy in the month August, and that clearly consolidate a position of scientific-technical leadership of our institution in its three campuses: Granada, Ceuta and Melilla ”.
Great satisfaction
Aranda highlights that "the position of the University of Granada is very good in practically all areas of knowledge", and points out that this achievement "is the fruit of the effort of the entire university community and of a scientific policy in which we are committed to improvement of infrastructures, but also by human resources ”.
The Rector pointed out that "it is a great satisfaction to see how the UGR consolidates its position among the 300 best universities in the world, and is among the four best in Spain and the first in Andalusia."
Thus, Pilar Aranda points out that “the first eight months of 2021 could not have been better for the UGR, because in them we have attended with great satisfaction the granting of the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence seal for the Institute of Mathematics of the UGR (IMAG), or the signing of the IFMIF-DONES agreement that promotes Granada's candidacy to host the particle accelerator, milestones to which this new Shanghai Ranking is now added ”.
"These data confirm that at the UGR we are on the right track, and that, although more financial resources are always needed, we must also continue working to make research regulations more flexible. For this, a new Law on Universities is necessary, in which the research and teaching structures work in parallel, and not found, as is often the case, ”says the rector.
For his part, the vice-rector for Research and Transfer of the UGR, Enrique Herrera, points out that “this is the result of the great work that both the Teaching and Research Staff (PDI) and the Administration and Services Staff (PAS) of the UGR, in addition to all areas of knowledge: from History, Philosophy, Law, Health areas, Science and Informatics ”.
Since 2003, the ARWU Ranking, the most prestigious in existence, ranks the best universities in the world annually based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data.
The Shanghai Ranking takes into account indicators such as the number of students and staff who have won Nobel Prizes; the number of articles published in high-impact journals (especially Nature and Science); the number of highly cited researchers and articles indexed in the Science Citation Index and the per capita performance. ARWU analyzes more than 2,000 universities each year and collects data from the top 1,000.
