The UK has allocated a quarter of a million to youth science
Out of 441 submitted projects of doctoral students, the UK supported 257 of them, while on average each grant received 970 euros. The greatest interest in CU Grants has traditionally been expressed by doctoral students of the Faculty of Science, CU, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, CU and the Faculty of Medicine, CU.
Among the supported grants is also research into the concentration of toxic metals and semi-metals in the soils of Bratislava community gardens, which is carried out by Zuzana Pilková from the Faculty of Science, Charles University. For example, the presence of arsenic, copper, lead, zinc or mercury will be investigated. Their sources in the urban environment are mainly human activities such as transport, heating, waste incineration and industry. The research will assess the impact of these activities on community vegetable growing and the resulting risks. "In Slovakia, this is the first research of its kind, in addition to the knowledge immediately applicable in practice," says Zuzana Pilková.
New didactic materials, especially for primary school history teachers, are created by doctoral student Jaroslav Durec from the Faculty of Education, Charles University. With the help of life stories of Slovak personalities, he would like to contribute to the innovation of history teaching. Among them are Slovak personalities of the 20th century such as A. Hlinka, M. Hodža, A. Dub?ek, MR Štefánik, but also lesser-known personalities from the Slovak environment. "In ýsled whom the short set of several didactic and methodological materials on Slovak personalities of the 20th century Dostupn ý online ," approaching Jaroslav Durec.
Monika Vojteková, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Management at Charles University, is researching homework and the challenges that this form of work brings to employees. The social dignity of people with multiple sclerosis in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic is being investigated by Lucia Podolinská from the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. The restrictions brought about by the pandemic make people with multiple sclerosis even more vulnerable. "I carry out the research through interviews and it focuses on experiencing dignity, on the way in which patients lose it or try to maintain it," describes Lucia Podolinská. The result should allow healthcare professionals to focus on this side of the patient when providing healthcare.
"For many young scientists, the UK grant is their first experience of applying for research grants. We want to give them the opportunity to experience what it is like and at the same time provide start-up resources to launch dissertation research. The competition was really strong this year. I am convinced that the investment will pay off in the form of quality scientific outputs and in the form of young people ready to withstand the demanding conditions of the competition for resources for academic research, " said the Rector of Charles University Marek Štev?ek.
