Portugal is an attractive country, not only because of its education system, but also because of its active lifestyle and affordable living expenses. The education system is complex and many fields of study offer degree courses (undergraduate and postgraduate). Students pursuing an academic degree may enroll at a university, while students seeking a professional specialisation have the opportunity to graduate from polytechnic universities.

You would need to speak both English and Portuguese in order to be able to complete a degree in Portugal. The experience of a study course in the westernmost part of mainland Europe would however be rewarding.

You should check whether you need a student visa and read about the steps you should take to get it before applying for a Polytechnic or University degree course in Portugal. If you have chosen to study abroad in Portugal and come from a country within the EU or EEA, good news! You won't need a student visa from Portugal. For students from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, the same thing happens.

If you are still not sure where you want to study in Portugal, you will have to determine before you can begin the process of applying for your student visa. After being admitted to a Portuguese university, you will obtain the letter of acceptance needed to apply for a visa.

You may apply for one of the following visas for Portugal for study purposes:

- For students applying for a short study or language course that lasts between 3 months and one year.

- For students who apply for an advanced degree that is longer than one year a residency visa plus a residence permit.

There are no particular language requirements in order to receive a study visa for Portugal. Consulates do not ask applicants to submit any proof of language proficiency, as this is one of the necessary requirements for admission to a Portuguese university. Students from the EU/EEA are permitted to work in Portugal without limitations or time limits. Students from outside the EU/EEA can take part-time (up to 20 hours per week or full-time vacation jobs.
